In this sequel piece, I’m reaching into my bag of optimism to highlight some of KC’s biggest, most enjoyable strengths as they gear up for the postseason:
Quarterback:
Let’s start with the obvious—Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs’ biggest weapon is, of course, their quarterback. No one gives you more confidence heading into January football than Mahomes. Whether it’s a game-winning drive, a clutch throw, or simply elevating the entire offense, Mahomes is the kind of player who can flip a game on its head in a blink. His ability to make something out of nothing in high-pressure situations is unmatched. With Mahomes under center, the Chiefs are always a threat in the postseason.
Experience:
The Chiefs have been here before. With Andy Reid at the helm, Mahomes as the QB1, and a roster that’s battle-tested, this team knows how to handle the grind of the playoffs. That experience—across both the coaching staff and the players—is invaluable when the stakes are high. This is a squad that’s made deep postseason runs year after year, and that kind of pedigree matters when you’re staring down a do-or-die game. They’ve been through the adversity, and they’ve come out on top.
Defense:
While the Chiefs' defense has been a bit of a rollercoaster this season—struggling at times with consistency, especially against the pass—it’s a unit with playoff potential. We’ve seen flashes of greatness, and in the postseason, they know how to turn it up. With Chris Jones dominating up front and a secondary that can make plays when it matters, this defense has the ability to step up in the big moments. If they can find that extra gear again, their defense could be the difference-maker in another playoff run.
