On Sunday, September fifthteenth, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Cincinatti Bengals for a second straight time in a 26-25 nail biter which, yet again, came down to the final seconds.
Takeaway one: Nobody hurts Mahomes like Lou Anaroumo.
While the Chiefs emerged victorious, Patrick Mahomes’ record against Joe Burrow now stands at two wins and three losses, highlighting the challenges he faces against Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. Known for crafting schemes that consistently trouble Mahomes, Anarumo’s defense forced him into an uncharacteristic performance, limiting him to just over 150 passing yards and two interceptions. Although Mahomes showcased his brilliance with a deep touchdown to Rashee Rice, the Chiefs' win came thanks to a controversial defensive pass interference call on Bengals rookie safety Daijahn Anthony, which set up the game-winning field goal.
Takeaway two: Trent McDuffie passes the Chase test.
Trent McDuffie continues to showcase his elite skills as a cornerback, and his performance against Ja'Marr Chase is a prime example. Throughout the game, McDuffie effectively locked down Chase, limiting his opportunities and getting inside his head. With tight coverage and physicality, McDuffie frustrated the star receiver, showcasing not only his technical abilities but also his mental toughness. His ability to neutralize one of the league's top talents demonstrates why he's rapidly establishing himself as one of the premier cornerbacks in the NFL. McDuffie’s growth and confidence are pivotal for the Chiefs’ defense.
Takeaway three: Isaiah Pacheco left the stadium on crutches... who can man the backfield for KC?
Isaiah Pacheco’s injury is a significant blow for the Kansas City Chiefs, especially after his standout performance in their recent game. Pacheco had been establishing himself as a dynamic playmaker in the backfield, combining speed, power, and a relentless running style that has made him a fan favorite. His ability to break tackles and gain yards after contact was pivotal for the Chiefs' offensive scheme, which relies on balance and versatility.
The timing of his injury is particularly unfortunate as the Chiefs gear up for a challenging part of their schedule. Without Pacheco, the team loses a crucial element of their running game, which can lead to increased pressure on Patrick Mahomes and the passing attack. This imbalance can make it easier for opposing defenses to key in on Mahomes, resulting in fewer explosive plays and a less efficient offense.
Fortunately, the Chiefs have options to mitigate Pacheco's absence. Jerick McKinnon has proven to be a reliable back in past seasons, bringing experience and versatility to the offense. His ability to catch passes out of the backfield can help maintain some of the offensive flow that Pacheco provided.
Another intriguing option could be Kareem Hunt, a former Chief who is currently a free agent. Hunt’s familiarity with the Kansas City system and his experience as a lead back make him a viable candidate to return. He has the skill set to complement Mahomes and could provide the necessary spark in the running game. Hunt’s ability to catch passes and run effectively between the tackles would make him a seamless fit in the Chiefs' offensive scheme.
